Mounting height matters. Under NFPA 10, extinguishers weighing 40 lb or less should be mounted with the top of the unit no more than 5 feet above the floor. Units over 40 lb should be no more than 3.5 feet. Every extinguisher needs at least 4 inches of clearance at the bottom. Your local fire marshal may have additional requirements for your building.
